Comments from the Judge:
When asked to judge any competition, my approach is to ask the following questions:
1) Is there an individual spirit in the work?
2) Is there a reverence for materials?
3) Is there a commitment to excellence?

These three questions, when addressed by the artist, I believe yield work of honesty and integrity.

Regarding the work submitted for this exhibition, I was impressed with the diversity of creative expression - evidence that the artists are seeking their own independent voices.

I applaud your organization for offering these competitions. It gives all (of) us - artists and the public - the opportunity to inquire and learn from each other.

1st Place, Rachel Goldstein for Untitled (Mom and Dad)

"At first glance, the cut out shapes seem playful but with further study this personal narrative speaks volumes about the psychology of relationships. The woman's direct stare/plea vs. the man's detachment. Her idle hands vs. his clutch on the remote control. Is nature serving as a devise for tranquility or destruction? Divided relationships, fragments of unspoken stories. The interplay of color allows the viewer to move across the composition. It is a wonderful puzzle with a punch."

2nd Place, Paul Keysar for House Fire

"The visual contradictions of this painting instantly grabbed my attention. The precisely plowed red field against the burning red flames in a neatly structured home. The detail of the telephone pole as it seems choked by smoke. Is it truly a fire or emotional flames pouring from the upstairs windows? The controlled painting surface plays against the chaos. The small scale speaks to a quiet desperation more than to a fire alarm."

3rd Place, Eric Soller for The Maneuver

"A strong composition with a superb attention to detail. Clearly this artist is in command of the medium. The viewer is witness to the team's concentration as the water churns around them."

HM, Lisa Mitchell for Waiting in Color

"It was energizing to see the gusty brushstrokes, a search to really sculpt with paint. In just a few strokes, the fleshy mark formed the lips, the chin became an anchor. I was intrigued by the directness of application and the disquieting distant gaze."

HM, Dan O'Neill for Flowing Lava

"A refreshing approach to the western landscape. Is it a bird's eye view or the dissection of the earth's crust? The fluidness of paint, the scratch marks-somewhat na•vely executed- create a playful yet sophisticated expression. It gives the viewer an engaging experience- a true understanding of the land-its power and fragility. We are all able to delight in it."
